How Much will a Divorce Cost

How much will a divorce cost?
What if I can not afford an attorney?

New York State law provides that, under certain circumstances, your spouse may be ordered to pay for your attorney's fees.  If one spouse is in better financial circumstances than the other, it is possible that the Court will either order contribution to attorney's fees or your spouse may enter
into an agreement to pay all, or a portion of your attorney's fees.

We recommend that you call to schedule an appointment
.  Initial consultations are offered for reasonable fees.  You will be advised of what
you should expect to reasonably accomplish, and the cost to you for any service recommended.  If you retain this firm for your divorce, the consultation fee will be credited to any amount charged for services
related to the consultation.

Court filing fees and process service
disbursements directly related to a divorce action cost typically about $400.

This firm's attorney's fees for a divorce generally start at $2,500.  We have found that client's are more comfortable with a flat fee than an hourly rate.
Flat fees are often not possible in divorce cases because it is difficult to anticipate how reasonable or unreasonable your spouse will be, how many
Court appearances will be required and how much time will be expended in pursuing a fair resolution of the important issues presented in your case.
For that reason, divorce cases are generally charged at an hourly rate.  Exceptions are made if there appear to be no issues to negotiate, or resolve through court hearings, and your divorce can be completed with one court appearance.

You will leave your consultation knowing what you should reasonably expect, how we believe we can assist you and what payments will be required of you, if you decide to retain us.

The information you obtain on this site is not meant to be relied on as legal advice.  You should consult an attorney for individual advice concerning your particular situation.
